Happy New Year everyone!
XCOM: Enemy Unknown
How did your holiday vacation go? I spent mine at home, playing with this new game on my iPad. It’s called XCOM Enemy Unknown. It is described by iTunes as the “WINNER OF THE GOLDEN JOYSTICKS AWARD FOR MOBILE GAME OF THE YEAR”. It’s a strategy game where you get to control the Extra-terrestrial Combat Unit (XCOM) in battling aliens and their fleet. What a good way to awaken my inner Sci-Fi Nerd!
Terrifying indeed! *shivers*
Here’s the official description from iTunes:
“Threatened by an unknown enemy, Earth’s governments unite to form an elite paramilitary organization, known as XCOM. As the commander of XCOM, you must create a fully operational base, research alien technologies, plan combat missions, and lead your soldiers in fierce battles against a terrifying alien invasion. The decisions you make will affect the fate of humanity. You are our last hope.”
Aside from controlling your squad in their missions against the invading aliens, players must also consider the overall improvement and progress of their home base. Building the Laboratory, Workshop, and Foundry will greatly enhance the combat skills of the squad members. Certain amount and requirements should be met prior building each facility.
Sample Council Report
As the Commander, players must also consider the panic levels in member countries of the council. The council is responsible for the funding and the game is over if 8 countries have withdrawn from the XCOM Project. Panic levels can be reduced by launching satellites to each country. Building a satellite will take 20 days and there should be sufficient satellite uplink capacity in the base. Exciting, isn’t it?
I have 2 things that I don’t like about this game though:
XCOM Enemy Unknown in the Appstore
1. Expensive!!! The app is initially sold in iTunes for $19.99. Games usually costs around $1.99 – $4.99 in the Appstore and XCOM is totally far out at almost $20. Update: They are available now at $9.99. Still pricey but lesser than the initial price. I am so thankful that I got this app for a gift! Or else, I wouldn’t spend that amount for a game.
Had to restart the app a few times just to finish this game. Grrr!
2. IT. CRASHES. EVERY. TIME. With the beautiful graphics, full-rotation-control of the settings, impressive background music and sound effects, my 16 GB iPad 2 sure is outnumbered. It used up 3.3 GB of my memory and had to install it overnight. The app crashes after every mission so be sure to save your progress all the time.
8 hostiles spotted! Kill me now! *cries*
Well, that’s about it! Overall, I am still hooked with XCOM Enemy Unknown and would recommend it to all Sci-Fi fanatics like me! Until then, Commander!
9 MUTONS in Operation Final Hammer!!!! *cries*
Poor performance means poor rating from the council. 🙁
Learned my lesson, by June 2015, I got an “Excellent work, Commander” from the Council
Got a “B” by July 2015 and South Africa has withdrawn from the project 🙁
Only lost 2 lives during an Alien Terror Attack.
Got another A again!
